The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced President Muhammadu Buhari president-elect, following the collation of results of the 23 February election. President Buhari crossed the 15 million mark in votes scored in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 of the states, after the result of Rivers was added.
His main challenger Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 11,262,978 votes and won 17 states and Abuja.
Buhari also satisfied the constitutional requirement of making 25 per cent in 34 states and the FCT. He missed the cut in Enugu and Anambra states.
In 2015, Buhari scored 15, 424,921 votes to beat the PDP incumbent Goodluck Jonathan who scored 12,853,162 votes.
It means Abubakar performed worse
than Jonathan.

Endy, the lesson I have learned from this presidential elections is that most of us in the South and Middle Belt overrated Atiku in the core North. Although he has more widespread acceptance in all regions of Nigeria than Buhari, the bitter truth is that he does not have a political stronghold like every average politician in Africa. Most of us were betting that he would reduce considerably the votes of the Hausa/ Fulani/Kanuri for Buhari and add to the majority he has in the Middle Belt and South and emerge victorious. I discovered he is s political lightweight in the Core North. He struggled to win his own state. If you check the 2015 presidential results, you will discovered that each of the two candidates scored almost 90% in their region. And the South West added to the votes of the core North gave Buhari victory. Granted that this exercise did not meet the minimum requirements for free, fair and transparent elections but even if you conduct another round of elections, Atiku will still be taken to the cleaners.
It is unfortunate because I was rooting for someone who will come and reform the oil and gas and power sectors in order to attract local and foreign investments, since Buhari thinks these sectors are OK like this.
