Buhari Government To Register Cattle / Cow From Neighbouring Countries

Sixty years after the suspension of registration of cattle, sheep and goats coming from neighboring countries, the Federal Government is to re-introduce the policy to
curb spread of livestock diseases across the country, the government disclosed this at the weekend.

It also unveiled plans to review government policies on the movement of cattle, sheep and goats between Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, while speaking at the inauguration of the governing council of the Nigerian Veterinary Council five years after the previous one was disbanded, said, “As a ministry, we are taking steps to re-introduce the registration of cattle and sheep coming into the country.”

He further disclosed that the ministry was in the process of presenting funding request to Federal Executive Council to tackle pest and diseases across the country, saying as soon as the approval got, implementation would begin to contain the diseases.

The minister also pointed out that the sector had been witnessing increasing investment in the last five years, adding, “As veterinarians, you must be interested that many developments are coming into the sector, and you start thinking of how to key into the developments that are coming into the country.”
