University of Benin drags Edo govt to court over unlawful evictions

AUTHORITIES of the University of Benin, have dragged Edo State Government before an Edo State High Court sitting in Benin, over the eviction of staff of the institution occupying 18 landed property located at Government Reservation Area, GRA, in Benin-City.

The university, in the suit, is seeking to restrain the government, its agents, servants or privies from evicting its staff from the property, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Meanwhile, hearing in the suit had been fixed for March 5, 2013.

The university is contending in the suit, that since its inception in 1970 as Mid-West Institute of Technology, the institution started as the property of the defunct Mid-West State Government, which had metamorphosed from Bendel to Edo and Delta states.

It argued that like every new project, the defunct Mid-Weststate government committed it resources to ensuring the successful take –off of the institution.
