Why APC Settled For Ahmed Lawan As Senate President

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, textThe All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday said that it settled for Senator Ahmed Lawan as the next Senate President after wide consultations with the President and other leaders of the party.
It said the choice followed consideration of all available options. The party also said the stand of the party not to share power in the National Assembly with the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) is borne out of the fact that it has a clear majority and does not need the PDP to run successful government.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, told reporters on Wednesday in Abuja that having settled for Lawan as Senate President, the party is working out an acceptable zoning formula for other positions in the Senate and House of Representatives.
Majority of senators-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are in support of the recommendation of Ahmad Lawan as the 9th Senate President, Sen Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi had said.

Sabi, who represents Niger North Senatorial District on the platform of the APC, said it was not true that majority of the APC senators were “shocked” at the selection of Lawan by the APC.

The APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had during a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday night said the party was recommending Lawan for the position.

However, one of the contenders for the seat, Mohammed Ali Ndume, from Borno state told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that most of the APC senators at the dinner were shocked and that the position did not represent what Buhari wants.

However, reacting to Ndume’s claim, Sabi, who is Senate spokesman, said there was nothing like “shock,” rather, he said, majority of the APC senators applauded the party’s decision.

“When our National Chairman made the announcement during the meeting, majority, if not all, the senators present applauded him. Everybody was comfortable with the position of the party. So, there wasn’t anything like shock,” he said.

Sabi also said that the APC senators supporting Lawan were in talks with senators-elect of the PDP to gain their support for a smooth running of the Senate to deliver good legislations for Nigerians.

He said he believed Lawan is the best man for the job at this time given his wealth of experience and track records.

IDIKA: then APC might not agree for a deal

Daniel Orji

Endy everything is wrong with the zoning of the 9th assembly, going by what the apc have on ground now!
How can the president come from the north
His vice from west
Senate president= north
Deputy senate. president=north
What happened to the easterners??
And that's why am completely in support of orjiuzor kalu on his stand that if the apc refuses to give him the Deputy senate president, he will vie for the position of the senate president!

If he can win about 15 to 20 APC senators to his side and strike a good deal with the PDP, he will definitely emerge as the next Senate president

What has the choice of who becomes the senate president got to do with the business of the president??? Why should the president be consulted before the choice of who becomes the Senate president can be made??? Do those who went to consult the president know the duty or the duties of the senate in particular and the national Assembly in general at all??? Do they know about what is referred to as separation of power??? Are they aware that the senate has oversight functions over the president??? Do they know what is called checks and balances??? Are they aware that the senate has the constitutional power to check the excesses of the president and even impeach him when the need arises??? Are they aware that by going to the president to consult him on the matter of who becomes the senate president they have dealt a big blow on democracy in Nigeria??? Why is APC bent on destroying democracy in Nigeria???
The APC should know that the choice of who becomes the senate president is solely the business of the senators. The elections the APC organized was a complete sham and a big minus to democracy. Now they want to render the National Assembly toothless and impotent with their blind and anti people politics and politics of mediocrity. May God save Nigeria and Nigerians from the hands of APC.

Endy, I don't give a damn. He is from Yobe, a State that has 91% poverty rate and almost 89% illiteracy rate. He has been in the Senate for centuries. Has that changed the condition of his people? The calamitous situation in the North East is an indictment on all the elites there, past and present. Eg: Buhari, Sheriff, Shettima, Buratai, Babagana Mungunu, the National Security Adviser, etc. They have completely failed their people, especially the youth. Their children are studying in UK, USA, while other youths are doing "almajiris, iron condemn, okada riding, scavenging, kidnapping, armed banditry, etc.
This is the only country where people waste precious time discussing things that have no bearing on the lives of citizens. Ali Dume from Bornu is also eying that position.. Only in 2018, about 80,000 people fled their homes to seek shelter in IDP camps. What value will Dume as Senate president add? In that part of the world, they adore politicking, leaving serious issues affecting the lives of their people who always stand under the sun to vote them into offices.
