Nigeria's National Population Commission (NPC) has officially ended manual, paper-based birth and death registrations across the country. Effective July 1, 2026, the commission completely migrated all civil registrations to a 100% online platform. Moving forward, any certificate issued outside this new digital system will no longer be recognized by government authorities.

How Registration Works Now
The new portal offers two primary paths for registering a vital event:
  1. Self-Service: Parents can log on to the portal, fill out required details, and upload documents from home. NPC staff validate the files online, allowing users to print their digital certificates directly.
  2. Assisted Service: For individuals without internet access, ward registrars and primary health centers have been deployed across local government areas to guide families through the process manually.
Requirements & Pricing Structure
  • Children Under 5 Years: Registration remains completely free. To register a child, the mother’s National Identification Number (NIN) is strictly required to verify the informant’s identity. If the mother is unavailable, a father or legal guardian can provide theirs.
  • Individuals 5 Years and Older: Applicants in this category will receive an Attestation Certificate rather than a standard birth certificate. Courts affidavits are no longer accepted as standalone proof of birth for older citizens.
  • Administrative Fees: While basic infant registration is free, the NPC has implemented revised fees for specialized administrative tasks. This includes record modifications, certificate reissuances, and formal verification
