Jubilation As Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom From Bandits’ Captivity

All the remaining kidnapped pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have successfully regained their freedom. The rescue was officially announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following a coordinated operation by Nigerian security agencies.

Key Details of the Rescue Operation

  • The Announcement: The Presidency confirmed the rescue on the evening of Friday, July 10, 2026, ending a tense multi-week abduction crisis.
  • The Operation: Security forces, including the military and tactical squads, successfully cornered the criminal gang, blocked their escape routes around the Old Oyo National Park, and applied sustained pressure to force the release.
  • Casualties & Arrests: Eight of the kidnappers were arrested during the operation and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while several other gang members were neutralised. Tragically, during their 56 days in captivity, one of the abducted mathematics teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed by the terrorists.
  • Victim Count: The initial coordinated attack occurred on May 15, 2026, across three schools in the Ahoro-Esiele, Yawota, and Esiele communities, resulting in the mass abduction of over 40 individuals, including primary pupils, secondary students, teachers, and a school principal
